How this works
CheckMyCandidates puts everything public about a candidate in one place, down to village boards, so you can see what's on your ballot and compare any two candidates for the same seat.
Where the information comes from
- Who's on the ballot: each state election office's certified candidate list, and county election offices' candidate lists and notices of election. Where an official list couldn't be read online yet, the race says its listing came from a secondary source.
- What candidates say: their own campaign websites and campaign social accounts, and their answers to candidate questionnaires.
- Records: official government sites, such as the Legislature's bill pages, congress.gov, and board minutes.
- Money: official campaign finance filings (FEC for federal races; each state's campaign finance office for state and local races).
Every fact links to its source. When we couldn't find something, the page says so instead of guessing.
Fair to every candidate
- Every candidate in a race gets the same fields and the same search.
- Candidates are listed in the order the official list prints them.
- Positions are their own words in short quotes, or a plain summary of what they said. We never infer a position from party, donors or endorsements.
- There are no scores, ratings or endorsements from us.
Something wrong or missing?
Candidates and voters can send a correction with a link to the source. We check it and update the page.
